The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo!  What an event and one that I have wanted to see for quite some time.  It’s not easy getting to Edinburgh in August, planning, vacation request and of course the almighty dollar helps, but I did it this year.  If you have been following my travels, I came to Scotland in August this year, 2018, to attend the Annual Stewart Society Gathering.  A group I have only recently joined and was THRILLED to attend, however, when in Scotland you must do all that you can do, because quite simply, it is an amazing country with amazing people and incredible history, beauty and awe.

If you get a chance, check out the link to the Tattoo to read more about it.  It really is impressive. .

The word Tattoo might conjure up some cool ink on my body parts, but indeed, to borrow from the Tattoo itself, it means and I quote, “The word ‘tattoo’ derives from the cry of innkeepers in the Low Countries in the 17th and 18th centuries. At closing time, the fifes and drums of the local regiment would march through the streets, their music signalling a return to quarters, and the shout would go up – ‘Doe den tap toe’ (‘turn off the taps’)”, unquote. (Not sure if that is the proper way to display this, but if there is a correction someone would like to tell me about, I will be glad for the advise and help, thanks)!

Here is some of the video/pictures I took, I have to tell you when I hear bagpipes, my heart clenches up and I cry happy tears and it affects me this way.  Wow, I know I sound like a sap, but everyone reacts differently to sounds and this sound bestills my heart.

This was such an amazing experience.  The host of the Tattoo kept all of us engaged and informed of who was performing.  The beginning obviously were my beloved bagpipers and drummers and after that, there were a variety of countries that also performed, including the United States and our own United States Air Force Drill Team.  I am a bit partial, my son-in-law is in the Air Force!

Here is a few more pictures to see, really it was so much to take in but it was done with precision and professionalism.  I was so impressed at the way all of the teams performed on this night.  I am sure they did awesome each and every night as well.

I hope you like all the photos and video, it does not replace being there though.  I feel so lucky that I was able to go.  After first reading about the Tattoo a few years ago, I was a goal to attend and I did!!!!  It was so worth it.  I hope to be able to go back more than once in my lifetime, but so happy to say that I was able to attend.

This post has more videos and pictures, but that is the only way to show you all the amazing performances in a short amount of time.

You need to check this performance from the “Top Secret” Drum Corps.  It was amazing!!!

There was a good flow from one performance to the next.  It ended with then “Going into Space”.  The music was fun and lighting and all the fireworks.  It just was a great time.  I would definitely go back again if I am in Edinburgh in August and I hope that is soon than later!

Please try to attend if you can when your in Scotland in August!!!! You will not be disappointed!!! Sorry about the long videos and my really bad singing!!!! 🙂

As always, comments or corrections are appreciated!!
